Устное сообщение по лексическому практикуму Animals have always played an important role in human life. They are our companions, helpers, and part of the natural world. However, in modern society there is an ongoing discussion about whether people empathize with animals more than with other humans, and whether this attitude is cynical or justified. Some people believe that it is cynical to show more empathy toward pets than toward people. Humans face wars, poverty, loneliness, and injustice, and ignoring human suffering while focusing only on animals may seem morally wrong. Nevertheless, I partly disagree with this opinion. Animals are completely dependent on humans and cannot protect themselves or speak about their pain. Pets offer unconditional love and loyalty, which often makes people feel emotionally closer to them. Therefore, empathy for animals does not necessarily mean a lack of compassion for people; it simply reflects a different type of emotional connection. This issue is closely related to the ideas of speciesism and anthropocentrism. Speciesism is the belief that one species, usually humans, is more important than others and has the right to dominate them. Anthropocentrism places humans at the center of moral consideration, valuing human needs above all else. Personally, I do not fully support either philosophy. I believe that all living beings deserve respect, although humans do have greater responsibility because of their intelligence and power. A balanced approach, where people care about both humans and animals, seems the most ethical. Life without animals would be extremely poor and empty. Animals are essential for ecosystems: they help maintain natural balance, pollinate plants, and support food chains. Without animals, nature would collapse, and human life would become unsustainable. Moreover, animals bring emotional richness to our lives. Many people find comfort, joy, and even healing in their relationships with pets. There are many ways to protect animals. Governments can introduce stricter laws against animal cruelty and protect endangered species. Individuals can adopt animals instead of buying them, support animal shelters, avoid products tested on animals, and raise awareness about environmental issues. Education is also crucial, as teaching children to respect animals helps create a more compassionate society. In conclusion, caring deeply about animals is not cynical if it does not replace empathy for people. Respect for animals reflects humanity’s moral maturity. A world where people protect animals while supporting each other would be kinder, more balanced, and more humane.
