Most bats are small; the common American
brown bat is less than 10 centimeters
long. The brown bat has big wings. When
they are open they measure almost 36
centimeters. One of the biggest bats in
the world is the flying fox and it lives in
southeast Asia. Its body is almost 31
centimeters long and when it opens its
wings, they measure about one and a half
meters.

Bats have small pointed teeth and very
small eyes. They cannot see well but they
can hear better than people. When they fly
they use their wings and ears, because the
sounds they make help them find their way.
Their ears help them to fly in dark caves
and during the night. A bat cave is usually a
noisy place because bats make all kinds of
sounds to talk to each other.
Page 68 - exercise 3
Bats are small animals that fly, but they are
not birds. They usually sleep during the
day and when they sleep they hang upside
down. At night they wake up and fly around.
But they don’t like flying in the rain.
